Want to help Charlotte shine? Voting is now live for Southern Living magazine’s annual “South’s Best” awards. The highly coveted distinction singles out all that’s good in the South: barbecue, breweries, hotels and even cities themselves. And all the votes come from people like you. (When you vote, you’re also entered to win a $2,500 grand prize, but we digress.)
Naturally, Charlotte and her many amenities are in the running for top slots. Cast your vote before Oct. 9 to help these local establishments get the recognition they deserve.
Best Restaurant in North Carolina
Inspired by Southern mill town life, this NoDa eatery serves family-style dishes that recall the city’s roots. Plus, its drinks come in Instagram-worthy packaging.
A James Beard Award nominee for Best Restaurant,
This Waxhaw restaurant recently announced that it’s moving to the Elizabeth neighborhood, a fact that should thrill Charlotte foodies: The palate pleaser is home to James Beard Award nominee Paul Verica, whose chef chops give other cooks a run for their money.
With chef Joe Kindred at the helm—he was nominated for a James Beard Award, too—this Davidson darling has taken our culinary scene by storm with just two words: milk bread.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this cozy B&B has been sitting pretty in Myers Park since 1915. The building was once home to the Duke family, whose lasting legacies include Duke University, Duke Energy and the Duke Endowment.
In the heart of Uptown, this four-star hotel is all about the details—Ghirardelli chocolates at turndown service and a wine social featuring snacks from The Asbury, among other amenities.
Best Brewery Tour/Tasting Room
With 40-plus breweries in the city, Charlotteans know it’s impossible to choose just one. But the wealth of indoor and outdoor seating at NoDa Brewing Company’s new location makes this early brew connoisseur the cream of the crop.
Best Barbecue Joint in North Carolina
No Charlotte barbecue joints are on Southern Living’s list—an oversight we can’t quite stomach. We’re casting our lot in with Bill Spoon’s, the Eastern-style eatery that has been serving the Southern delicacy since 1963.
Best Festival in North Carolina
Again, Crown Town’s festivals didn’t make the cut, but we think the competitive spirit, live music and all-out fun of the U.S. National Whitewater Center’s annual shindig make Tuck Fest the festival the South has been waiting for.
Charleston, South Carolina, won the No. 1 spot last year, but we can’t let them have all the fun. The Queen City is one of the fastest growing cities in the country—and for good reason.
Best Small Towns
We all know how awesome Davidson is, so it’s time to give the bookish town some Southern Living love. With delicious food and a cute main drag, our neighbor deserves a vote—or seven.
